He soon found the love and benefits of martial arts training and developed into a championship fighter. He went on to fight in the 67kg weight division at Kickboxing and Muay Thai, winning a NSW state title and proving himself as one of the fittest and most relentless fighters anyone will face. Scott always stepped up to fight anyone and quickly took on much more experienced people, because no one else would fight him. He has a no quit style and brings a touch of fancy super hero moves to basic hard work. If you stand in front of Scott, you better be ready to go the distance and have a war.
He now continues to train daily and coaches Muay Thai, Fitness and Boxing. Scott is one of the very few people to ever grade to Level 5 and continues to improve, learn and pass on his knowledge. He has a wealth of knowledge and is in the gym everyday to train and pass on his knowledge and ‘wit’ to other members.
Scott is a dedicated and loyal person who spends much of his non Phoenix time helping kids and sharing his skills and knowledge with Canberra’s superheros. He spends most weekends as Spiderman and also back’s up as the flash and Captain America when they have a hard day. The closest thing to a real superhero at Phoenix; Scott is genuine, hard working, fit and a great community member that is a part of the Phoenix family.

I have been training at and a part of the Phoenix community for over four years now. Back when I started, I was unfit, unsure of my future in life, and didn’t have the confidence to defend myself.
As a part of the Phoenix community, I have grown significantly. I have trained with beginners and national/international champions. I have lifted more weight than I could’ve imagined. I have sprinted up mountains people don’t want to walk. I have had coaches’ mentor me in how to get off the ropes both in the ring, and in life. I have found life-long friendships with other members in this big team of diverse people who come together, work hard, and bring out the best in one another.
Four years later, I am a determined, resilient professional with the confidence to take on whatever life has in store for me. I was told I wouldn’t get into university – now I am completing my Doctorate. I was told I would not be successful – I now run my own successful business. I was bullied about my appearance – now I’m fitter and stronger than ever before, and the happiest and most accomplished I have ever been.
If you want to be the best version of yourself, exceed your limits, and grow your character – Phoenix is for you. What will you be like in four years?

I remember my first session at Phoenix gym, or at least, sitting in the carpark full of nerves. The thought of walking into a combat sports gym was really intimidating. I walked through the doors and have never looked back. I was a first grade rugby union player at the time and thought a bit of boxing in the off season would be beneficial for my fitness. After my first session I was addicted and never went back to rugby. Instead I learned how to box, I couldn’t get enough. I then started Muay Thai training and began to get the itch to attempt sparring. Once I started sparring I was hooked and there was no looking back. Phoenix values hard work and respect, two qualities that I personally value incredibly high. It is a family friendly gym that welcomes people of all levels of fitness and skill. When I started at Phoenix I was overweight but after about a year I had dropped close to 30kg, I often remark to friends that Phoenix gym has given me an extra fifteen years of life. Phoenix has a motto ‘fitter, faster, stronger’ if you train here, you will become those things.
Eventually I got the urge to test myself at the highest level, by competing in the ring. Anthony was very open to the idea and the coaching staff was amazing in preparing me to compete. I went on to be the first Phoenix fighter to compete in mixed martial arts (MMA). I competed five times under the Phoenix banner and these are some of my greatest memories and proudest achievements.
But Phoenix is not about training fighters to compete. It is about training people to become better – physically and mentally. I smile every time I walked through the gym doors, I have some amazing friendships at the gym. There is a comradery between club members and I feel at home when I am there, all the stress of the day washes away.
After retiring from competition I became hooked on the strength and conditioning aspect of Phoenix and loved pushing my body to its limits. I was offered a position coaching the phoenixfit classes and now coach three times a week. Phoenix is a huge part of my life and I owe a lot to the club.
So, if you are reading this and wondering why train at Phoenix? There are so many gyms that claim what we claim, but that’s like an apple claiming to be an orange. We have Australian Muay Thai champions, BJJ Black belts, Olympic level wrestlers, AIS boxing coaches and qualified strength and conditioning coaches. Phoenix is simply the best at what it does.
I am so glad I stepped through the Phoenix doors.
I have had the pleasure of training at Phoenix Gym for several years. The dedicated and professional staff, well-developed training programs and excellent facilities will put you on track to achieve your goals – whether it’s fitness, self-defence or fighting.
I came to Phoenix with prior experience, but even with experience, coming into a new gym is always scary, especially when you don’t know anyone. I had heard so many great things about Phoenix Gym, particularly about their training style and fighters. I remember sitting nervously waiting for a class to start and having Anthony come up to me to have a chat – I didn’t know that such a small conversation would make me feel so welcomed.
I continue to train at Phoenix because of the environment and the people. I am constantly learning in the sport and the coaches there are full of knowledge and they have helped to develop my skill. This is the first gym I have been to that has provided me with numerous opportunities with fighting, such as competing in the 2018 Muay Thai Australian Nation Championships. I have only been at phoenix for a short period of time, but I am already seeing improvements. I have a long journey to reach my goals, but I know that Phoenix is the best place to be to reach them.
Why I joined Phoenix and why I still train at Phoenix are two very different reasons.
Back in March 2010 a close friend dragged me along to a beginner Muay Thai class at Phoenix. I was quite overweight and, although I had managed to lose some weight training at a traditional gym, I was bored and feeling very unmotivated.
Having dabbled with Karate in my younger years I thought that my experience would mean that I would be prepared for what was to come – I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Every single class took me out of my comfort zone and I quickly became hooked training up to 6 days per week. Lead and inspired by the knowledgeable coaches, my motivation quickly returned as I learned to push beyond limitations that I had placed on myself.
In my time with Phoenix I have lost 15kg and am the fittest/ healthiest that I have ever been. I have also had the privilege of representing Phoenix in more than 10 fights. One of the highlights of my fighting career was representing Australia and receiving a bronze medal at the Muay Thai Amateur World Championships in Malaysia in 2014. These are accomplishments that, as someone who has been overweight and unfit for most of their life, I could never have imagined. And they would not have been possible without the amazing coaches at Phoenix.
Now I won’t lie to you, the journey from that first class to stepping into the ring for my first fight was a long and extremely challenging one. I didn’t always have fun and it certainly wasn’t easy, but I was never alone. The coaches and like-minded, hardworking students train along side you and, through the blood, sweat and tears that you shed together, you develop a bond and become family. This is what separates Phoenix from all others and is the primary reason why I still train at Phoenix.
Today, 6 years on, I’m still a proud member of the Phoenix family. My priorities have changed and, due to a recent surgery, I can’t train the way that I used to, but this doesn’t matter at Phoenix. I’m still greatly valued as a member and, with the support and encouragement of Anthony and the coaches at Phoenix, I have now been presented with my next challenge – learning to coach. Being able to direct my energy, knowledge and experience towards being developed as a Phoenix coach has been extremely rewarding so far and I look forward to inspiring the next generation of Phoenix members the same way that I was inspired by my coaches all those years ago.
I joined Phoenix Gym in February 2012 in an effort to get fit. I had done a kickboxing style class before, which I found fun but more focussed on workout than technique. I had heard about Phoenix from a few friends and it had a reputation for being a real kickboxing gym. I had been to Thailand before and seen Muay Thai fights and had always admired the fighters so I took the chance and joined up.
It was everything I’d hoped for and more. The friendly and motivated team of coaches taught us all proper technique AND it was the hardest workout I’d ever done. There is a huge variety of training options from Muay Thai, BJJ, wrestling and boxing to strength and conditioning, which makes every class new and enjoyable. Slowly building up strength and confidence I found myself addicted. As I improved I wanted to take my training to the next level, to learn to utilize the skills taught to us and learn to spar. I came to a few “hard sparring” days and got my a$$ handed to me but it showed me a whole other side to my training, learning to fight.
Fighting is a mental game, both problem solving and having the perseverance to keep trying and not give up. This taught me a lot about myself and what I could achieve. I never thought I would compete in this sport but thanks to the inspirational coaches and fighters/training partners I have now had 7 fights and hoping for more. The coaches have gone above and beyond what any regular gym would to encourage and support me and all the other fighters. They take their own time and money to help build us as fighters and as people and I can never thank them enough for this. I remember watching the advanced students train and thinking how great they were and being totally inspired by their discipline and courage. Our training partners are the reason we have such a successful gym and I can’t thank them enough either for all their guidance, encouragement and inspiration.
From all the blood, sweat and tears (literally) it really does feel like a family. So why do I train there? Because phoenix has the hardest working coaches, most inspirational people and best level of training you could ever want. They are more than a gym they are a family and they have taught me more about myself than in any other sport. So whether you want to take your training to the next level or just come and in and have fun with the most welcoming and awesome like-minded people in Canberra phoenix is the place for you! TTFU!
I first came to Phoenix when my dad bought Anthony’s old van still adorned with Phoenix stickers and TTFU logos. After some research, I was curious about the gym itself and after heading in to my first junior dragons class, I had never seen as much commitment, motivation and effort by all different people going into their training. Needless to say, this rubbed off on me. After my first junior sparring classes I was hooked, and so eager to train as much as I could; alongside a great group of people and coaches that are constantly supporting and encouraging you to go that step further.
The first seminar I attended was an experience I’ll never forget. The coaches, top fighters, advanced to TTFU-intermediate students and beginners like me all training collectively to better their own techniques and help everyone else in doing the same. The sense of community at Phoenix is like no other, as everyone is connected with that goal of improvement, discipline and determination. Training with the fight team for the past couple of years has allowed to realise a whole new side of my training and fighting abilities, through hours and hours of hard slog. The sense of community and how rewarding the feelings are of pushing yourself to your limits and reaping the rewards of your hard training are truly indescribable. There have been countless Saturday mornings where I’ve left sparring completely exhausted, pummelled and covered in bruises with a big smile on my face because however small it may seem, knowing that you worked hard and that you’re improving is enough to make you smile through the pain.
I’ve been able to achieve things I never thought possible through my dedication and commitment to training and upholding the values of Phoenix Gym. I had my first fight and came away with a win, an experience I would previously have never even considered. The feeling of being in the ring surrounded by lights and noise and filled with adrenaline is one like no other. I wouldn’t have been able to even come close to that without the encouragement and support from everyone. The coaches, the fight team, and everyone else at Phoenix.
I can’t deny that training and fighting at Phoenix have been some of the hardest, yet most rewarding challenges I’ve ever faced, both mentally and physically. And I couldn’t think of a gym that gives you an experience anything like it. There has been (minimal) blood, a whole lot of sweat and certainly tears (along with a copious amount of bruising) during my time at training, sparring and being a dedicated member of Phoenix; but this is only just the beginning, I know I am only getting started.
I’ve been into fitness for most of my life and have been a member of several gyms, both here in Canberra and in Sydney.
Of all of these gyms I can honestly say that Phoenix is the best!
And here are three key reasons why:
1. You feel ‘part of something’ when you train at Phoenix versus just being another anonymous gym goer. Members and staff are friendly; people know you by name. It’s that sense of community and comradery that exists at Phoenix which is special and keeps you
coming back.
2. The quality of coaching is superb. All of the coaches at Phoenix work hard to craft challenging and varied workouts which push you; and once done, always leave you with that satisfied post workout glow. The coaches also take the time to talk to each class participant to provide tailored options for select participants if one or more of the set exercises in a class are too difficult for their level or if they are dealing with an injury.
3. ‘You’re not fit until you are Phoenix fit’ is actually a truism! I was doing a lot of gym work and running prior to joining Phoenix and considered myself very fit; but it wasn’t until joining Phoenix 4 years ago and doing their Grunt Fit & Fighting Fit classes that my fitness
went to the next level. Having tried many so called ‘high intensity training’ classes’ at other gyms I can safely say Phoenixes’ fitness classes easily trump them all and will have you ‘properly’ fit in no time.
When I was 4 years old I asked my parents if I could do Muay Thai, they were a little surprised but agreed that as soon as I turned 5, I could start. I began training at Phoenix Gym in 2011.
I enjoyed it so much and was eager to improve and train every day. Muay Thai has taught me so many morals such as respect, determination and self-confidence. In 2015 I stepped in the ring to have my first fight. I usually sparred with the boys who always challenged me so I wanted to see how I would go against someone the same size and weight as me. I won my fight and then went on to win 4 more.
Every time I am at the gym, I am encouraged to train hard and to the best of my ability. I am a fitter and braver person. Muay Thai constantly challenges me, which keeps me coming back to improve and gain more ability in all aspects of my fitness and skill.
The discipline and self-control that I’ve learnt through training in Muay Thai has also benefited me in other aspects of my life such as always trying as hard as I can at school to achieve the best results possible both academically and with school sports. Additionally, it has given me a greater understanding of how to stay happy and healthy through exercise and good nutrition as well as the effects of negative factors such as drugs and alcohol. Muay Thai is the sport I love because it always challenges me to work hard and I feel great after a tough training session. I love being super fit, strong and confident as well as encouraging the younger kids to do well. Through Muay Thai I have accomplished things I could only imagine. One day I hope to represent Australia at the Olympics in Muay Thai, that’s my goal.
